9.00pm; tuesday
this is cheesy, really. my sis' convocation is on the 20th and since i won't be staying till then we decided to do one of those (cheesy) family portraits. my sis had to pose with an smu bear and alongside a shelf of books, against a brickwall *cringes*. the process was hilarious though. my sis made me wear flats while she trotted about in heels. and midway through the photo, to get my dad to smile more, the photographer's assistant flapped about one of those toys that makes the most annoying clapping sounds when you wave it about vigourously. i broke out into laughter and soon my brother caught on and my sis kept nudging me to shut up because she was starting to laugh too. the photographer spent the next ten minutes, painstakingly, instructing and re-positioning each of us while my sister's tassle on kept flipping about as each of us took turns to break out in laughter. my dad cracked jokes when the photographer told my parents to be more loving- "loving? 25 years still talking good already". it was such a ruckus and well, the polaroid preview turned out pretty good. we lunched after, and like i always say, there's nothing like good food and great company ;)
Mrs White, in the Hall with the Lead Piping. Had an early birthday celebration lunch on sunday and we had kickass home cooked food thanks to my mom :) we just kept eating and eating (gelojoh right rohai?), tried unsuccessfully (thrice) to watch batman begins because we often trailed off into some conversation or other mid way through the show. It was such good company and it made me realize how much I’d miss all this once I fly back. Thank you kin for the pint of haagen dazs, likewise to jh for the choc choc chip (you know me so well!) and mango sorbet that most of us stuffed ourselves with while eng tat was wondering whether it was rev green or professor plum in the study with the dagger. Heh. I received my first record- a paul mc cartney *beams*- thanks to jolene(you're too good at cluedo LAH), jh, eng tat, andy. To my favourite minah friend (grin) dayanah, it was so good to see you again. I had a ball :) wish you came nic, missed you girl!
A whiter shade of pale. It’s rained earlier this morning. I have 3 days left of work/to spend time with my family before I fly off. Looking out of the window from andrew’s (my mentor) office, everything greys and hazes to a whiter shade of pale. The raindrops lightly streak the windows that frame the room.
I forgot to where a white blouse to court today and instead wore a pink one. Luckily our case got adjourned to next Monday because lai kew chai was busy with the huang na case and ours would have taken too long. I like a&g, not so much because of the prestige attached to it but because of the quality of work the lawyers here are committed to and the pride they take in that. It is not encumbered with the politics that other firms are frequently laden with and I have been very fortunate to be under such an inspirational and intelligent mentor/senior partner (i know this sounds like a god damn speech). The verbal sparring and intellectual repartee he engages in with other partners/ lawyers/ pupils just astounds me and if anything it has been a very humbling experience. He makes the concerted effort to take us under his wing and exposes us to material (albeit sensitive), cases (albeit confidential) and constantly prods me for my thoughts and opinions, correcting me where i'm wrong yet giving me credit when due. it's been demanding with the mental rigour involved leaving me sapped and physically drawing as well when i knock off (on a good day) at 8 or so.
It's 10 to 5 now. I’m not sure, I think we’re in the clouds. I can’t see anything out of the window, its shrouded in white. But we’re only on the 26th floor. I have spent all afternoon researching an issue because andrew asked me for my opinion. i'm hoping i'll say something legally intelligent and if i'm lucky won't be torn to shreds (heh). there's such a long, harrowing way ahead for me before i ever get to where he's at (if i'm lucky). This is daunting :| hmm, the clouds just cleared, the rain isn’t lashing at the windows anymore. who knows, maybe things may work out fine after all.
"i can see clearly now the rain is gone i can see all obstacles in my way gone are the clouds that had me down it's gonna be a bright, bright sun shiny day" -i can see clearly now, jimmy cliff
