14 January 2006

12.35pm; saturday

the week, the week. checked my email and realised that the organisation at harvard screwed up with the country allocations and we're left to pick from yemen, slovenia and gabon to be delegates of at world mun. i guess slovenia is the best option and after reading the brief, it looks pretty intersting, it being part of the european council. Gabon meanwhile is in the un devt prog and the study brief highlights micro enterprise/ micro credit programmes which is great because i'm really keen on exploring this issue. in any case, which ever i get allocated, it promises tonnes of research and lots of finger crossing that the dean will give us some funding. *awaits with bated breath*

that aside, tonnes of us walked into class on friday with pascal exclaming "le soleil brille!". pretending we understood, we nodded and kept saying "oui! oui!" with searched looks on each of our faces. realising later that he was referring to the weather, we figured he must have meant the sun that was shining. it was great to finally have a day that did not leave me manouevering my way through puddles, huddling under umbrellas, and finding my shoes wet(the horror the horror!) and soggy.

over waffles and ice cream jh and me had a great and reassuring conversation. i suppose to many, turning 21 may be just an abitrary number marking adulthood. to a certain extent, i'm sure it is. who is to say at 20, we will be vastly (biologically at least) different from how we're 21. and yet, you can't deny that it is the coming of age (culturally at least), things fall into perspective and you start realising the need to map out your thoughts, ideals and ambitions more clearly. it'll be a mere couple of years before we start earning our keep, our foray into the 'real world'- the world it seems that, for so long, everyone has been trying to prepare us for. of course it's petrifying to think of how we should and the ways to equip ourselves emotionally, financially and mentally for a different kind of life- away from the comforts of lectures and tutorials and frivolity. but it's been getting better, those hazy thoughts of mine. uncertainty and insecurities still plague the future but i've realised that worrying is futile and i should know better. it's going to be full of experiences i make for myself, never letting time slip by listelessly, just.like.that. of course there will be no moment of epiphany come 14 july but with 21, i'm starting to better understand what this is all about. i'm better at understanding me.

"sugar plum fairy, sugar plum fairy.."*
- a day in the life take , john lennon

*
During the recording of the song, "A Day in The Life", John Lennon would begin each take, counting the band into play by muttering the words "Sugar Plum Fairy, Sugar Plum Fairy" into the microphone in an ironic, lackadaisical tone of voice.
