i'm am still buzzing with exhilaration and euphoria. coldplay was simply bloody amazing and it was a concert that intertwined great music, funny stories, references to shane warne, beatles music (!), heartening jokes at the socceroos, a rendition of johnny cash's ring of fire and a great opening act by youth group. it was such bliss to watch them live because they were really good musicians and performers. i'm so glad i got standing tickets because they were absolutey worth it. because i couldn't have been more than 20 metres away from the stage and bobbing along with the crowd, singing to each song was an awesome experience.
wristbands for us standing ticket holders- me and ven
awaiting the concert to start :)
opening act: youth group with a good set. they played some of their new songs due to be released in a couple of weeks and ended off their gig with 'forever young'.
seats that go way up high...
they opened their act in darkness, with a countdown timer that had us all screaming in wild anticipation and excitement
chris martin rocks :)
chris marting bounces up and down his stool while playing away at his piano. it was surreal to see him play and sing favourites like "yellow", "in his place", "till kingdom come"
they had big yellow balloons roll down from the top of the arena and it finally got down to us in the pit and as it bobbed along the sea of screaming fans, some of the ballons burst and sent a shower of gold confetti on us! for a while everyone gleamed in gold.
speed of sound
the lights, laser display and flashing graphics on the screen behind the band really made for an entertaining and (i can't say this enough), kick arse performance. they were really good live.
the crowd went wild at this point because he had just taken pictures of the audience, of the whole arena and of the band on stage with a disposable camera and then he threw the camera into the audience. i'm still wondering who's the lucky bugger that caught it.
at many junctures, i called up people and held the phone up in the air for the person on the receiving end to hear coldplay live. jh was ecstatic to here them croon 'what if' and 'fix you' :)
i love love chris martin :)
as they sang "swallowed in the sea" they flashed across the screen lyrics from when they first wrote the song along with ideas that had been penned down which illustrated the evolution of X&Y.
this is them singing "ring of fire". some dude behind me went "johnny!". their rendition was really good, not shabby at all.
l-r: guy berryman, will champion, johnny buckland, chris martin
it was pure ecstasy to be in a crowd of people that cheered and sang to their hearts content; soaking up the atmosphere of live music.
they finished off with my favourite, "fix you". the video clips i took show chris martin spinning the lamp on that rope just as he did in the music video. he went silent towards the end and the audience just
sang the rest of the song.
leaving rod laver arena.
just as the arena had resonated with "tomorrow never knows" before coldplay came on stage, they walked off stage and "good night" played. i loved that they began and ended with the beatles and it gave me a very slight idea of what listening to the beatles at a concert must be like. but from chris martin running through the crowd all the way to the highest seats, to johnny buckland taking on the mike to sing, it was (for want of a better word) an amazing, amazing night.
