A JOURNAL

About Rose:
I grew up in Singapore, lived in Melbourne but currently call London home. I love gastronomic adventures, especially while travelling. I stated writing at 17 to remember how it all began.

sunday, 9.11pm

it's one of those days where i absolutely miss home/ my family. i miss those sundays where i wake up, go downstairs, have breakfast and try to find the papers to read but spend the next 15 minutes hunting them down. if dad had them it'd be by the computers. if mom were reading them, it's probably in their room. and i'd spend the afternoon going to my grandma's and my aunt's, have a nice lunch. And after i'd spend the rest of the day with mom and dad watching some telly and the whole family would go out for dinner.

and yet i've begun to realise that the idea of singapore and home is not synonymous. i miss my family, friends and the familiar places i've grown accustomed to but by no means do i feel this immense need to be back the very instant and opportunity i get to do so. However, that doesn't mean i don't consider it home- au contraire, it very much is- it just isn't the only one.

Earlier in the afternoon as i laid back and saw my apartment in a very different light (quite literally, with the sun shining through the windows) I realised that i'd miss this place immensely... for whatever reason- the little cafes on flinders lane, the galleries, parks or the way the whole city changes through the seasons.

i graduate next july and if everything goes as planned i'll be leaving in march to finish off my last sem elsewhere. how will that go? i fear it will be one of those dull aches that will inundate me with a sense of longing. how do you leave a place that helped you find yourself? maybe all this worry is premature and perhaps even unwarranted but the time will come when i won't know what to do with my coats or all the junk/ trinkets i've acquired these last few years. all i will have in hand is my LLB and the rest of my life to figure out. but till then i will wait patiently, for the change in season. i'll go up to the dandenongs when the tulips bloom in spring and sail around the bay with friends in the summer. and when summer goes so will i and it will be lovely, like it always was.

"like painted kites, those days and nights they went flyin' by
the world was new beneath a blue umbrella sky
then softer then, a piper-man one day it called to you
i lost you, i lost you to the summer wind"
