I went over to Mez’s place last night to welcome her back from her trip. There were the stories from Dubai, Istanbul to Cappadocia (!) and it was nothing short of amazing and inspiring. We sat there next to her laptop and looked through the many photos and videos she had amassed but I enjoyed most hearing of the experiences and the people she shared it with, none of which were discoverable from the pictures alone.

There was a sudden shift in my headspace in the last 2 days in terms of gaining perspective of where things are going. I have come to realise that while every experience is valuable, it’s those that manage to inspire and motivate you that really make all the difference.

I’ve done internships with law firms and have for the most part been very unimpressed with the rigmarole and false pretences of intellectual discourse that interns are made to think they are engaging in. In my experience at least, it’s just been grunt work. While I recognise that engaging (solely) in research work, repetitive routines and tedious administrative matters might be necessary when you’re that low down the legal food chain, it’s not what I’m looking for. Somehow, I feel that I will be tied down to these tasks and work culture in some places/countries more than others.

Maybe my perceptions will shift yet again with the coming clerkship in June and I won’t be surprised if it does. But for now, things are becoming distinctively clear between what I want and what I think I want. As a consequence, it is now apparent that like Mez, I have to choose the places and people I want to experience life with most carefully so that I might sometime in the future, sit and realise that I’ve constantly been inspired and only have love for the things and people around me. I’m not prepared to settle for anything less and will be uncompromising only because I shouldn't have to. Well, that’s the story, morning glory.

“And everything around her is a silver pool of light
The people who surround her feel the benefit of it
It makes you calm
She holds you captivated in her palm”
