02 January 2009

friday; 9.55pm

I went to the office today and realised that no one was in. I picked up my tennis gear for the game later and figured I'd just wander around. I decided to cut my hair short. As my hairdresser started snipping my tresses off, I remarked to him that I haven't had hair that short since about 7 years ago. He said that I was his first haircut for the year and we both smiled on knowing that it was a somewhat special haircut for both of us. When I left the hairdressers and crossed the street, I wandered into a quaint book store and spent time leafing through a book about Gehry, scanning the titles of travel books and walking around in the store some more.

I started to get hungry and figured brunch was a good idea but stopped by a couple of stores first. A bag and dress later, I found myself skipping puddles and running for the cafe as it started to pour. Famished and cold, I ordered a plate of scrambled eggs and chives on sourdough, smoked salmon and sliced avocado. As I tucked in, I tightened the scarf around my neck and put my beanie on. I sat there for a while.. tuned out to my iTouch and read my book - sympathising with Oblonsky and feeling for Levin's helplessness completely.

Brandon rang and suggested we have a hit at Melbourne Park and as I made my way towards the courts, I saw how it was all done up in preparation for the Aust Open. We sneaked onto one of the show courts and played on knowing that the top players would be where we were in a mere couple of weeks. It was beyond cool to be having a hit there with the sky a briliant shade of blue even if we kinda sucked. After the game, I decided to head back into the city to get a pair of jeans and picked up some flowers for the house. And when I could not carry any more bags and my tennis gear was weighing me down, I decided to head back. I reached home physically exhausted but yet also felt better than I had in days.

I guess the reason why I wrote what I did today with such specificity is because of the way it made me feel. I have been absolutely nervous about the things that lie ahead and it got to the point where I had an ominous sinking feeling and started finding it hard to be excited about the Hague. But today, I had a day to myself (for the most part) enjoying some of the things I love - listening to my music, a good meal, tennis and a little retail therapy. And just like that, I think that things might be alright after all.

"Steal my heart and hold my tongue
I feel my time, my time has come
Let me in unlock the door
I've never felt this way before"
-till kingdom come, coldplay
