I should really get some sleep but I don't want to quite yet. I'm not sure why but I do know I'll be regretting it at French classes later. I met a friend's friend for lunch today. She's Czech and we talked a bit about her being in Australia, my loving Gehry's building in Prague and everything in between. At some point we got on to talking about Spain and she spoke about Granada. I took a little gasp and gushed how I always wanted to visit the gardens of Alhambra. Recounting this conversation just moments ago, I began thinking about that list of five places in the world I'd want to see before I died. I remember compiling it when I was in Berlin, comparing places we had picked out, finding commonality and stark differences in our choices.
That life seems like a world away now, and while it quite literally is, things inevitably change once you start working proper. And yet, I am so excited to be learning so much at work. I know that the next couple of years might seem like a slow monotonous trudge compared to the last 2 years and so patience is key. But I love the people I work with - they are brilliant, engaging and kind. I feel valued and I'm glad I picked this firm. And perhaps maybe everything pans out in hindsight but I truly believe things are working very well. Sure some days I feel like I should just work at safeway when a sense of being an absolute idiot overwhelms me. But most times, I know I'm doing exactly what I want.
But on some nights, like tonight, when the summer heat wears away and the cool breeze of the night makes me shiver when I stand on the balcony of my apartment, those very shivers seem to jolt me back to that balcony, that cool breeze, that summer afternoon at the aparment in Charlottenburg. And while that moment passes, the dull ache it leaves in my chest persists.
