I started work this week with the Hague Conference on Private International Law and there's something about starting your first day at a Special Commission which convenes to review four treaties that await accession/ signature/ ratification. For the most part it overwhelms you when you realise you're watching international law being made and then there's also getting used to walking over to the Peace Palace to work everyday (for the next two weeks at least).

Then yesterday, the Dutch delegate took us on a tour of the Peace Palace and we got access to areas normally not opened to the public. It was such a privilege and beyond amazing to be standing in the court room were the ICJ sits and realise that just a day ago, they bench had rendered it's (first unanimous) judgment in the case between Romania and Ukraine regarding maritime boundaries. We saw other rooms, learned of its history and walked through the libraries where the papers from the Nuremburg trial are archived.
